Tortilla experimental workshop

Framed in my project as a Het Bos resident, I designed an experimental tortilla workshop consisting in putting the 5 main recipes of my book “The 5 tortillas my grandma gave birth to (and the many more yet to come)” into practice in a radically contrasting context.

The participants were split in 5 groups, and each one of them cooked one of the tortilla recipes, following the original transcription from my interviews in its original language, galician. To follow the original recipes was essential to me -using the food knowledge as an archive-, in order to successfully descontextualize them and make the people taking place on the workshop aware of the piece of culture they were borrowing. It is very much political because it relates to my Master Project where I explain how Tortilla has been rebranded to be perceived as inherently Spanish.

From the need of documenting the experience, THE VIDEO was born.

The video was shown along with the book and a text explanation on the collective exhibition ‘Vruchtbare Grond’, in October 2023.
