Anterpen, Anwers, Antwetpen

2021-2022

The project “Anterpen, Anwers, Antwetpen” raised from my curiosity and my need to capture all the details I found shocking about Antwerp and Belgium.

Before moving the to the city, I had never been in it, and so every first encounter with reality was a blind reaction.
To be honest, what I was expecting Antwerp to be was a very white city, very polished and structured, as they depict it in Spanish media. The european dream is to move where the old part of the cities looks like a disney fairytale and everyone is always on time.

Opposed to that, what I found was equally similar and different to my background, but more rough and authentic than I was expecting. All the pictures were taken in the neighbourhood of Borgerhout, that to me is a better synthesis of the city of Antwerp and Belgium in general than any postcard picture you can find.

The title, “Anterpen, Anwers, Antetpen“, refers to all the ways my mum misspelled the name of the city in her travel diary from when she came to visit me.
